Lauderdale man gets 10 years for shooting his wife in the buttocks

MERIDIAN – A Lauderdale man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting his wife three times more than two years ago. Alton Neal, 48, was arrested in May 2010 after an altercation with his wife, Yvette, at their home.

Neal was sentenced to 20 years in jail, 10 suspended with 10 to serve with the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC). Neal will also be on probation for five years following his release.

Authorities said a verbal altercation began at the couple’s residence in the 200 block of Joseph Street around 10:30 a.m. and resulted in Neal, a military veteran, shooting his wife once in the buttocks and twice in the shoulder.

Yvette Neal was transported to a Meridian hospital where she was treated for her injuries.

Deputies said at least two children were at the home when authorities arrived, and Alton Neal was sitting on the front porch when the deputies came. He was taken into custody and his bond was initially set at $250,000.
