JACKSON – (AP) A state lawmaker has filed to run for Mississippi Supreme Court in the November general election.
Rep. Earle Banks is the only candidate challenging Chief Justice William Waller Jr. in a district encompassing the central one-third of the state. Both live in Jackson.
Friday, May 11 was the candidate qualifying deadline for four seats on the Supreme Court and two on the Court of Appeals.
Supreme Court Justice Leslie King of Greenville is unopposed for another central district seat.
Justice Mike Randolph is challenged by Talmadge Braddock in a southern Supreme Court district. Both live in Hattiesburg.
Richard “Flip” Phillips of Batesville and Josiah Dennis Coleman of Toccopola are running for Supreme Court in the northern district. They’re competing to succeed Justice George Carlson of Batesville, who isn’t seeking re-election.
In one Court of Appeals race, incumbent Judge Ermea “EJ” Russell of Flora faces two challengers in a Delta district. They are Ceola James of Vicksburg and Latrice Westbrooks of Jackson.
Court of Appeals Judge Gene Fair of Hattiesburg is unopposed in a southern district.
Mississippi judicial candidates do not run under party labels.
The election is Nov. 6.
