COLUMBUS – (AP) Mississippi University for Women may bring sports back to the school.

The Commercial Dispatch reports that MUW president Jim Borsig plans to name a committee to explore the issue and report back by the fall.

If the response is positive, Borsig says he’ll have another committee examine the academic and financial ramifications of an MUW sports program.

Campus sports were discontinued in November 2002.

MUW once offered basketball, volleyball, softball, track and field, swimming, tennis, badminton and gymnastics

Mississippi University for Women’s athletics program suffered two harsh blows in late 2002.

A November tornado destroyed the gymnasium and the following month, then-President Claudia Limbert asked the College Board to discontinue the university’s intercollegiate athletic program and reallocate the funds to a fitness, recreation and intramural program.
