Historic stone to return to Ocean Springs

The Iberville Stone from Fort Maurepas, the first permanent settlement in the Mississippi Valley, dates back to 1699. The stone will be on display April 27 through April 29 in Ocean Springs.

OCEAN SPRINGS – (AP) The Iberville Stone will be on public view in Ocean Springs during the Weekend of Discovery April 27-29.

The Mississippi Press reports that this will be the first time in 80 years the stone will be in Ocean Springs. It is housed at the Cabildo museum in New Orleans.

The Iberville Stone was discovered near Front Beach in Ocean Springs in the early 1900s. It is believed to date back to the French-Canadian explorer Pierre Le Moyne, Sieur d’Iberville establishing Fort Maurepas in 1699 in Ocean Springs.

According to Cabildo officials, the Iberville Stone was recovered from the site of Fort Maurepas. The stone eventually ended up at the Cabildo.

The Walter Anderson Museum of Art will provide a pedestal to display the stone during the weekend.
