Cultural Arts Festival brings back ‘old school’ flavor

JACKSON – The West Jackson Community Development Corporation (West Jackson CDC) will bring the sounds and swing of the historical Lynch Street District back as it presents the 21st Annual Lynch Street Cultural Arts Festival on April 27 – 28, 2012.

Headlining the event are R&B superstars Rose Royce and Latimore.

West Jackson CDC is a community based, non-profit organization which provides housing, economic development, and social services to the West Jackson area. Their mission is to revitalize the west Jackson community surrounding Jackson State University.

This year’s festival will kick off with a cabaret style banquet at the W.M. Stringer Grand Lodge Masonic Temple located on Lynch Street. The banquet begins at 7 pm on Friday, April 27.

Tickets to the Banquet are $50 each or $500 for a table of 10.

Rose Royce, of ‘Car Wash,’ ‘Wishing On A Star,’ and ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’ fame, will perform.

Rose Royce will perform again on Saturday for the free street festival open to the public.

Saturday’s event begins at noon and will include a community health fair, a children’s village, local and national gospel and blues artists, vendors and more.

Latimore, known for his hits, ‘Let’s Straighten It Out,’ and ‘Around The World’ will close the festival out Saturday at 5 p.m.

Organizers said the Lynch Street Cultural Arts Festival is held each year to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Lynch Street community.

“This festival gives us an opportunity to celebrate the heritage and history of this community,” said Linda H. Carter, Executive Director of West Jackson CDC, “[And] our organization is very proud to be part of its continued history.”
