Texas teacher arrested for sex with student

Ajay Kumar Mangal

PASCAGOULA – Jackson County officials said a 24-year-old Texas man arrested in Mississippi for having sex with an underage student has been sent back to Texas to face those charges.

Ajay Kumar Mangal was taken into custody without incident on Feb. 1 at his family’s business on Chicot Road in Pascagoula, Lt. James DeShannon Massey said.

Mangal was wanted in Houston, Texas for an alleged sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female student.

KTRK, a Houston television station, reported that Mangal, who is a teacher at YES Prep East End High School, first noticed the student while she was dancing at a teacher’s going away party in September 2011.

Mangal had been a teacher there since 2010.

During the investigation, the student reportedly told police that she and Mangal started talking and texting each other and eventually went out to eat together. In a written statement, the student said she and Mangal discussed their relationship – her being underage and him being a teacher – but they still reportedly had sex on Sept. 16, 2011 at Mangal’s apartment.

KTRK said the girl’s mother became “suspicious” and checked her daughter’s cell phone where she found numerous emails from Mangal.

Authorities said in the course of nine days, there were approximately 900 calls and texts between Mangal’s phone and the student’s phone.

Lt. Massey said Mangal left Texas and returned to Mississippi where his family has a business in Pascagoula.

“We believed he’d been in the area for about two months [prior to his arrest],” Massey said. “And he was arrested on two outstanding warrants.”

Mangal waived extradition and was returned to Texas.
