Winston County speller wins the Mississippi Spelling Bee

JACKSON – Dev Jaiswal, a 5th grade student from Winston Academy, is Mississippi’s 2012 Spelling Bee Champion. Dev spelled the championship word mordacious in the 30th round of the Bee and will advance to the 85th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., where he will compete against Spelling Bee Champions from every state in America.

The Spelling Bee was held on March 20.

The Runner-Up in the Spelling Bee is Desiree Roby, a 5th grade student from Christian Home Educators Connection in Hinds County. Desiree was eliminated in Round 29 with the word immiserization.

The Mississippi Spelling Bee was broadcast live on Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB). MPB plans to air the event again.

Twenty-seven students from across Mississippi competed for the Mississippi Championship Spelling Bee Title. The Mississippi Association of Educators (MAE) has sponsored this event for the past four years and was honored to have Walt Grayson, the host of “Look Around Mississippi” on WLBT and MPB’s Mississippi Roads, as the official pronouncer for the competition.

The Mississippi Association of Educators will fund the expenditures for Dev and one parent for the National Spelling Bee which will be televised May 30 – 31, 2012.

MAE is committed to ensuring Mississippi students are represented at the national level and wishes to congratulate all the winners who participated in the spelling competition.
