Man pushing woman in wheelchair killed

JACKSON – Police are investigating the death of a 50-year-old man who was pushing a woman in a wheelchair when they were struck by a motorist Friday afternoon. The Clarion-Ledger reported that the car, a 2000 Honda Accord, hit the man, killing him and critically injured the 45-year-old disabled woman.

The driver is in custody.

The accident occurred just before 3 p.m., in front of the Captain D’s restaurant near Frontage Road and I-55.

Officer Colendula Green said after the driver of the Accord left the Big Lots parking lot, where he struck another vehicle, hewas seen weaving in and out of traffic before striking the man and his friend, WLBT reported.

The woman was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center where she was listed in critical condition.

Neither the names of the victims nor the driver were released immediately, but police are trying to determine if the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

The accident remains under investigation.
