JACKSON – The 25-year-old cousin of the Jackson State University student killed early Sunday morning at a pool party has been arrested and charged with his murder. Jackson police said Jarrod Emerson has been charged in the death of 19-year-old Nolan Ryan Henderson.

Henderson was shot to death outside an apartment at the Palisades apartment complex near Jackson State during a pool party.

In a statement, Emerson told police that his cousin called him after he (Henderson) had reportedly been in a fight with several Jackson State football players at the complex and told him to come over.

Emerson and Henderson allegedly teamed up at Highway 80 and Lynch Street and went back to confront the players, WLBT reported.

Police said Emerson reportedly pulled his gun and fired several rounds, and as the crowd scattered, Henderson was shot in the face. Two guns possibly connected to the shooting have been recovered by authorities.

Police said ballistics tests indicate that Henderson was shot with a bullet from Emerson’s gun. Emerson was charged Wednesday afternoon and is awaiting his initial court appearance.

JSU President Carolyn W. Meyers said students are still reacting to the tragedy.

“This is a sad ending to a tragic situation,” Meyers said. “The Jackson State University family continues to mourn for Nolan and will offer all of the support we can to the Henderson family. We will also continue to provide our complete support to the Jackson Police Department until its case is brought to full closure.”
