Victim found wearing only socks and shoes
Bolivar County Sheriff Kelvin Williams said a body found over the weekend in the Mississippi River near Rosedale has been linked to a mental institution in Tennessee.
Williams told WABG that a fisherman found the body Saturday, March 24. Williams said the man’s body only had on shoes and socks and a wristband from a mental institution in Shelby County. The wristband had a photo on it and the name Samuel Brooks. It showed Brooks was 36-years-old.
Investigators are trying to locate Brooks’ family, and an autopsy will be conducted.
Man killed, woman injured when truck flips near Kiln
Hancock County Coroner Jim Faulk says one man died in a one-vehicle crash north of Kiln. Faulk told The Sun Herald that 51-year-old James McNay Jr. of Kiln was killed Tuesday night, March 20, when his truck ran off the road and flipped over.
The crash happened on Dummy Line Road between Mississippi 43 and Mississippi 603. A female in McNay’s truck was injured. The accident remains under investigation.
Suspect sought in Saucier pharmacy break-in
Harrison County deputies are looking for a suspect in the burglary of a Saucier pharmacy on Thursday, March 22. The Sun Herald reported that an alarm at R&D Pharmacy went off about 6:20 a.m. The suspect had fled by the time deputies arrived, but security cameras snapped his picture.
Authorities said the man was wearing a blue rain jacket, black gloves and blue jeans. A bandanna covered his face.
Deputies said prescription drugs were taken in the break-in.
Justice Carlson to be honored by Mississippi State
Mississippi Supreme Court Presiding Justice George C. Carlson Jr. has been selected for Mississippi State University’s 2012 Distinguished Jurist Award.
Carlson will be honored at a March 29 ceremony. Selections for the honor are made by a committee of political science faculty and Pre-Law Society members.
Carlson was appointed to the Supreme Court by former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove in 2001. In 2004, he was elected to serve an eight-year term and, in 2009, became a presiding justice. He will retire at the end of this term.
Carlson was in private practice 1972-82 before being elected in 1983 as circuit judge in the 17th Judicial District. He was re-elected without opposition four times.
He is a graduate of MSU and the University of Mississippi law school.
Man killed after car crashes into horse
A 48-year-old Rienzi man was killed last month when his car crashed into a stray horse on Highway 45 in Prentiss County.
Trooper Ray Hall, of the highway patrol, told The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that Timothy E. Crow was southbound in a 1998 Buick LeSabre when the horse came into his lane near County Road 8061 north of Booneville on Feb. 14.
Crow was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hall said there haven’t been nuisance complaints of horses in the road in the recent past. Hall said Crow was alone and did not appear to have been speeding.
Clay County reduces inmate numbers
Clay County has reduced by half the number of Starkville inmates it will now accept. The Daily Times Leader reports that Clay County has housed Starkville inmates since last July.
Clay County had reserved 15 beds for Starkville inmates, charging the city of Starkville $35 a day per inmate.
Now the number of beds reserves has been cut to seven.
Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott says he talked with Starkville Police Chief David Lindley about the change, which is largely due to transportation costs to drive the inmates back and forth from Starkville.
Clay County supervisors agreed to the change.
