MDOT reports ice on bridges in Bolivar and Washington counties

JACKSON – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is announcing a winter weather alert on bridge conditions for motorists traveling through Bolivar and Washington counties.

As freezing temperatures continue to plague the state, icy accumulation has been reported in the following areas:

· Highway 450 Bridge, six miles west of the Highway 61 intersection.

· Highway 1 Bridge, three-quarters of a mile south of Highway 450.

· U.S. Highway 82 Bridge, two miles east of Highway 454.

MDOT would like to remind motorists that snow and ice accumulations create hazardous driving conditions. As a result of these conditions MDOT requests that travel be avoided if possible and that motorists REDUCE TRAVEL SPEEDS and use extreme caution at bridges and overpasses if travel is necessary.

“MDOT maintenance crews are out de-icing affected bridges,” Central District Commissioner Dick Hall said. “But motorists must slow down and use extreme caution when driving over these bridges as there can still be slick areas. We all have to work together to keep our roads and bridges safe during winter weather events.”

Weather authorities said a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow is possible for counties near I-55 and west throughout the day. There may be some slight accumulation to grassy and elevated surfaces.

That mix is expected to transition to all rain by early evening and later Monday night.

Highs are looked to top out today in the middle 40s.

MDOT personnel are continuing to monitor road conditions and apply materials as necessary to keep Mississippi roadways passable. MDOT will keep motorists posted on road conditions as information becomes available.
