USM releases football schedule

The University of Southern Miss will play their first football game on Sept. 1 at Nebraska.

HATTIESBURG – (AP) Southern Miss opens the 2012 football season Sept. 1 at Nebraska with non-conference home dates with Louisville and Boise State.

The Golden Eagles, 12-2 and Conference USA champions last season, travel to Lincoln, Neb., to face the Cornhuskers. The two teams last met in 2004, when USM recorded a 21-17 victory.

The Eagles open C-USA play at home against East Carolina on Sept. 15. That precedes three straight non-conference games _ at Western Kentucky on Sept. 22, followed by home games with Louisville (Sept. 29) and Boise State (Oct. 6).

Southern Miss also hosts C-USA foes Marshall (Oct. 20), UAB (Nov. 3) and UTEP (Nov. 17). Conference road games are at Central Florida (Oct. 13), at Rice (Oct. 27), at SMU (Nov. 10) and at Memphis (Nov. 24).
