Suspect in hammer beating death shot by police

BILOXI – An Arizona man suspected of beating a 72-year-old co-worker to death in Louisiana was shot by police in Biloxi on Saturday. Carl Lance Wise, 56, of Scottsdale, died in surgery after he allegedly got out of his car and charged at police with a knife.

Biloxi authorities were pursuing Wise after he allegedly committed two armed robberies in D’Iberville.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said Wise died during surgery.

Wise was also wanted in connection with the murder of James Jones in the Jesuit Bend community of Plaquemines Parish, La.

Authorities said Jones had not been seen or heard from in recent days and police went to his home in the 12000 block of Highway 23 for a wellness check on Jan. 19. When officers entered the residence, they found Jones lying near the front door in a pool of blood. He had been beaten to death with a hammer.

During their investigation, detectives focused on Wise, who used to work with Jones at an oil field service company, The Biloxi Sun-Herald reported.

Authorities also learned that Wise may have had a drug addiction and was seen in the area asking other former co-workers for money.

Detectives learned Wise was headed to Mississippi and were able to track him to the Florida panhandle using cell phone records. After his cell phone was disabled, authorities lost contact with him.

On Saturday, Jan. 21, one of Wise’s relatives notified Plaquemines authorities that Wise had been killed by Biloxi police following a high speed chase.

Plaquemines Parish detectives are in Biloxi working with authorities there to obtain any evidence that could link Wise to Jones’ death.

Jones’ murder was the first in the parish since April 2009, the sheriff’s office said.
