JSU Tigers beats Grambling State 80-67

JACKSON – The Jackson State men’s basketball team earned its first winning streak of the season, without its leading scorer and the SWAC Preseason Player of the Year Jenirro Bush, by beating the Grambling State Tigers 80-67 in Southwestern Athletic Conference action Saturday night at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.

With the win JSU improves to a 5-14 overall record and a 3-4 SWAC mark. GSU falls to 2-15, 2-5.

Christian Williams, who proved more than capable of leading the team, led JSU’s scoring effort as he finished with 28 points and a game-high five assists. Williams was 9-15 from the field and a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line.

Kelsey Howard followed with a 15 point effort and Derrell Taylor added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Quincy Roberts also scored 28 points on 10-22 shooting. He also grabbed five rebounds. David Copeland was the other GSU Tiger to score in double figures as he finished with 12 points on 4-8 shooting.

Jackson State jumped out to an early 10-2 lead and never looked back.

JSU took a 35-28 lead into halftime. JSU outscored GSU 45-39 in the second half. Jackson State never trailed in the game.

As a team, Jackson State was perfect from the free throw line, making all 23 attempts. Grambling was 16-26 from the line.

Jackson State will return to action Saturday, Jan. 28 to take on the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils in Itta Bena, MS.

In the meantime, Jackson State senior Jenirro Bush, will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon in his right foot during a win against Texas Southern on Jan. 16.

The 6-foot-7 Bush averaged 15.5 points per game. The Southwestern Athletic Conference preseason player of the year was also second on the team with 4.7 rebounds per game.

Bush scored a team-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds in his last game with a 54-51 victory over Texas Southern before the injury with 9:49 remaining.

Coach Tevester Anderson says Bush is “not only a tremendous talent on the court, he is an even better young man who has a very bright future ahead of him.”
