Parole denied for man in killing of state trooper

Trooper Steve Hood was killed pursuing suspect

The Mississippi Parole Board has refused early release for a man convicted of felony fleeing in the death of a Mississippi state trooper.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal said the action was taken in the case of 27-year-old Williams Francis.

Trooper Steve Hood was killed in May 2009 when he lost control of his vehicle while pursuing a vehicle driven by Francis near Guntown. Francis pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 40 years in prison with 33 years suspended.

The proposed early release was opposed by the Mississippi State Troopers Association. The Parole Board held a hearing for Francis in early December.

Covington County man electrocuted

Authorities say a Covington county man was electrocuted while working to replace a power company line.

Officials tell WDAM TV that Shannon Cameron of Collins was killed after coming in contact with a live wire about 8 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4.

Cameron was working for MDR, a power line construction company based in Columbia, which was replacing a power line for Dixie Electric. The accident occurred in Covington county near the Jones county line.

Company officials say Cameron had worked for MDR for a short period of time but had been in the power line replacement business for several years

Blockbuster to close Greenville store

The Blockbuster store in Greenville is scheduled to close by March 18 and signs outside the store advise customers that everything will be sold, including furniture. Some new DVDs are being sold for $9.95.

The closure reflects a nationwide trend. Many California stores closed in early 2010 after Blockbuster declared bankruptcy and was acquired by Dish Network.

Dish Network said closures are based on a number of factors including performance and lease expirations.

Blockbuster will continue to focus on its Blockbuster Total Access DVDs By Mail service where, for a flat monthly fee, customers have access to over 100,000 titles, Blu-ray and game rentals, and in-store exchanges at participating Blockbuster stores.

Employees from the Greenville store may be relocated to other area stores.

Man faces burglary, escape charges

A Booneville man faces charges of burglary and escape.

Sheriff Randy Tolar says David Whitlock, 40, was being held on a burglary warrant from the state of Texas.

He says Booneville Police also filed additional charges of burglary against Whitlock while he was in custody.

Tolar says Whitlock was being moved from one location in the jail to another when he made a run for the door.

Whitlock managed to get from the main jail area into the front of the building. He was captured after trying to open a secured exterior door.

Whitlock remains in the Prentiss County jail.

Clarke County man wounded in shooting

Clarke County Sheriff Todd Kemp says the shooting of a 50-year-old Shubuta man appears to have been the result of a drug deal that went sour.

Kemp says Mississippi and Alabama authorities are looking for three men in Thursday’s incident. He says investigators are looking a black Kia Sorento with an Alabama license plate.

Kemp says David Wayne Hales of Shubuta underwent surgery for his wounds at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Kemp says the wounds were not life-threatening.

Investigators found Hales’ home ransacked and Kemp says the assailants entered the home looking for something but apparently left empty handed.

Deputies did find two pounds of marijuana inside the home. Hales is now facing drug possession charges.

New police chief on duty in Holly Springs

Holly Springs’ new police chief, James Dean, took the helm of his department on Monday, Jan. 9.

Dean tells the South Reporter that he likes to work with smaller police department that gives him the opportunity to get outside and work as a police officer.

The 53-year-old Dean has served as chief of police in two towns in Missouri and also worked for sheriff’s departments in that state.

Man robbed leaving laundry mat

On Friday, Jan. 6, at approximately 6:05 a.m., officers responded to an armed robbery of a business at Southland Center Coil Laundry at 3923 B Terry Road in Jackson.

The complainant/victim informed officers while leaving the building, he was approached by a black male subject dressed in all black; medium complexion with freckles; approx. 6’0 medium built displaying a weapon. The suspect took money from the victim and fled the scene on foot.

Detectives are currently following up on this incident.
