Shootings followed by high speed chase

Police in Greenwood said as many as five suspects were involved in a shooting that left one person dead and two wounded.

The shootings, which occurred early Tuesday, Nov. 8, near Greenwood’s McLaurin Park, were followed by a high-speed chase and, later, the capture of one person at an apartment complex. The Greenwood Commonwealth reported that charges were pending.

Police responding to gunshots found two men on the ground and another standing next to a car with a wounded leg. One of the men on the ground was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers saw a car nearby run a red light. That led to a chase that ended when five people in the car got out and ran into nearby woods. One person was spotted and taken into custody at an apartment complex.

Man in custody in recent Clarke Co shooting

A man wanted in connection with last month’s shooting of a woman in Clarke County is in custody.

Clarke Sheriff Todd Kemp tells WTOK television that Jerry Wayne McCarty turned himself in Monday, Nov. 7, about 5:15 p.m.

Kemp said he had talked with McCarty’s family and encouraged them to help authorities find McCarty.

Kemp said McCarty was being sought in connection with an early October shooting that injured his girlfriend. The Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that McCarty was booked on a charge of aggravated assault. There was no word on whether he had an attorney.

Vaughn water system gets $1.2 million

Congressman Bennie Thompson said the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development has awarded a grant in the amount of $520,000 and a loan in the amount of $680,000 to the Casey Jones Water Association, Inc. in Vaughn, Mississippi.

The Rural Development funds will be used to install a new well to provide a much needed back-up water supply system with good quality water, a new SCADA control system for both wells and a radio read metering system to monitor water usage, a standby generator for the new well, upgrading of the distribution system and repainting of the existing storage tanks. The project will allow for better health and reasonable growth.

Inmate Graduation Held at Mississippi State Penitentiary

Inmates at the Mississippi State Penitentiary (MSP) at Parchman, Miss., recently participated in a graduation ceremony. The graduation ceremony was held for 37 inmates who completed classes offered by the vocational school at MSP. Ten inmates were presented diplomas for earning the General Educational Development (GED).

The GED test consists of five parts and is equivalent to a high school degree. To earn a GED, one must pass a five part test consisting of reading, language/writing (including an essay), math, social studies, and science.

Twenty-seven vocational students were also recognized at the ceremony and received certificates of achievement for completing the required occupational competencies in various areas of Vocational Training including: 4 with welding certificates, 3 with electrical certificates and 4 with auto mechanics, 4 with A/C and refrigeration, 4 with marine maintenance, 4 with carpentry, 3 with diesel mechanics, and 1 with electronic services.
