Woman shoots elderly man over money

CLEVELAND – A 22-year old woman has been bound over to the grand jury after police said she shot an elderly man in the back that refused to give her money. Devonna Hutton waived her right to a preliminary hearing in Cleveland City Court on charges of aggravated assault and robbery for allegedly shooting David Brown, 71, just before Christmas.

Cleveland Police Chief Charles “Buster” Bingham said on Wednesday, Dec. 23, around 4:30 a.m., Hutton went to Brown’s residence, on Pearl Street, asking for money. When Brown said he “didn’t have any,” Bingham said Hutton followed him inside his home.

“She came in and asked him again, and he said he didn’t have any,” Chief Bingham said. “And that’s when she shot him in the back and he ran out of the house and left her there.”

Chief Bingham said neighbors called police and when the officers arrived, they discovered Brown had been shot.

“He was conscious, alert and orientated when they got there,” Bingham said. “But the officers didn’t know that he had been shot until they noticed blood all around his waist area.”

Chief Bingham said Brown had been shot once with a small caliber handgun and he was transported to Bolivar Medical Center. Hutton, who fled the scene, reportedly with Brown’s wallet, was apprehended a short time later.

“We picked her up several blocks away [from Brown’s residence], attempting to knock on someone’s door,” Chief Bingham said.

Hutton, who Chief Bingham said is “well-known” by Cleveland police was transported to the Bolivar County Correctional Facility, and her bond was set at $20,000.
