Mo’Nique to give local newscast in Miss. competition

Premiering Monday, Oct. 5, new to late night television, is The Mo’Nique Show on Black Entertainment Television (BET) at 10 Central Standard Time.

The comedienne and actress told The Mississippi Link in a recent telephone interview that viewers can expect “A Big Party!”

“We want you to feel good when you turn us off,” she said. “I can’t tell you detail for detail what to expect, because every show is going to be different. When you go to your girlfriend’s house for a party, you don’t always know what to expect, do you? Well, with The Mo’Nique Show, there will be some surprises.”

The nightly show will air in Mississippi at the same time as the local newscast. Will this pose a conflict for viewers? Not for local resident Matthew Caston. “Yes, I’ll give it a try,” he said. “Even if it’s not the best show, I’ll probably still watch. We need to give our celebrities a chance. Besides, Mo’Nique is a Queen of Comedy!”

At Jackson State University, nearly 20 students in a journalism class were poled as to whether they would be watching the show. All but two hands were raised. Those two admitted they did not know about the show.

To clear up somewhat a misinterpretation by some of what she said to Al Roker on the Today Show regarding who the target audience is, Mo’Nique stated, “Now, what I said was everybody can watch it. We accept all eyes, but we make no apologies that this is Black Entertainment Television.”

According to published reports, “The Mo’Nique Show has been described as a “part-talk, part-variety show” that will last an hour”

However, she told The Mississippi Link that the show would also have its serious moments as well. One of the issues her show will shed some light on is molestation, an issue in the movie, Precious, in which she stars.

Nevertheless, her goal is still to make viewers feel good having watched the show.

Steve Harvey, and Tiny and Toya are slated to be among her premier guests. More of the first week’s guests on Mo’Nique’s show include Queen Latifah, Ginuwine and Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, the Lincoln Heights cast and KJ Rose, according to the BET website..

This Mississippi Link reporter asked, when are you coming to Mississippi? “I tell you what, ‘I will be coming to Mississippi on my Tour of Schedule,” Mo’Nique said.
