Mayor announces $86.7 million plan for McCoy Building

Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson, Jr. along with other federal and city officials held a press conference this morning to discuss the planned renovation of the Dr. A.H. McCoy Federal Building.

“The U.S. General Services Administration is about to modernize and renovate the Dr. A.H. McCoy federal building,” said Johnson. “This renovation will begin next month and will include interior repair, upgrades to improve security and provide energy efficiency conservation and safety.”

Last month, the U.S. General Services Administration awarded the $60 million construction contract to Skanska USA Building Inc., a Swedish-based multinational construction firm.

The renovation of the 423,000-square-foot building is being funded through the federal stimulus.

“I am particularly proud that the city of Jackson was awarded this renovation on a competitive basis and is only one of 120 buildings across the United States to have been chosen for this particular grant,” said Johnson.

The renovation also will include a number of security improvements, including the construction of a 3,000-square-foot “security pavilion.”

The lead architecture firm is Schwartz/Silver Architects out of Boston. However, Mayor Johnson said he looks forward to “having Jacksonians work on this project.”

The 30-year-old building is located at Capitol and Farish streets in downtown Jackson.
