Special to The Mississippi Link

Nineteen JPS students enrolled in the district’s Career Develop-ment Center were honored April 28 at the Nissan Training Center in Madison County.

The students are graduates of the Student Technology Exchange Program (STEP) which is sponsored by Nissan, the Mississippi Department of Education, and the Mississippi State University Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems (CAVS) Extension.

Two students – Bernard Aldrich and Brittany Greer – received $1,000 scholarships for excelling in the program. Aldrich plans to attend Jackson State University, while Greer will attend Mississippi State University.

CDC instructor Calvin Washington also was honored for his leadership with the STEP program.

Students enrolled in technology application classes who are interested in pursuing careers in engineering and want to further their studies are eligible to participate in the STEP program. The four participating schools are:

• JPS Career Development Center

• Madison Career and Technical Center

• Canton Career Center

• Leake County Vocational Technical Center

The program is designed to introduce students and instructors to the latest Technology Applications being used at a major manufacturing facility.

Participating students complete a minimum of 54 hours throughout the school year and complete a final project/competition to demonstrate their comprehension and application of this technology.

Activities include a tour of the Nissan Manufacturing plant, student final projects, robotics competition, and graduation ceremony.
