JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Governor Haley Barbour is expected Monday to survey tornado damage in Simpson County.

Almost 30 people were injured and dozens of homes and other structures were damaged or destroyed when a twister, packing winds of about 130 mph ripped through Magee in Simpson County early Thursday, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

On Friday, state emergency officials said tornadoes and high winds destroyed or heavily damaged many more homes than originally thought.

Ninety-four residences statewide were reported as destroyed or having major damage, MEMA said. Another 209 homes were reported affected by the storms.

Barbour has declared a state of emergency, opening the door for federal aid, and cleanup continues in many parts of the state.
