Murrah High player dies in wreck

A Murrah High School basketball player dies in an afternoon crash. The student body of Murrah High School is now mourning his death, and praying for the strong recovery of another. Two other students were also in the SUV that crashed in Jackson’s Belhaven subdivision.

Seventeen-year-old LaChristopher Ulmer was riding in the backseat and was thrown out of the vehicle. He was pronounced dead on arrival at UMC. Dundrecous Nelson, a stand-out Guard on the team was taken to UMC and is being kept overnight for observation. Other team members and students, Jason Hubbard and Daniel Francis were treated and released.

The crash happened at Riverside Drive and St. Ann Street around 3:00 Friday afternoon. Police say Nelson was driving. They also say he lost control, flipped the SUV several times and hit a tree. Police say the teens were speeding on the road that has extreme dips and curves. They also say inexperience was a factor. All of the teens were wearing seatbelts.

Monday the school district plans to have counselors on hand to help students deal with the tragedy.

Murrah High School’s principal released this statement:

“The Murrah High School family is saddened by the loss of LaChristopher Ulmer. Chris was a very respectful and conscientious young man. He was a hard working student who took tremendous pride in his school, and he was popular among the entire faculty and student body. Chris truly will be missed.

“We are tremendously thankful that the other three young men are in good condition.”
