When the metro area turned out for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade this morning, Saturday, Jan. 17, they saw a very familiar face leading the way: WLBT-TV3 Anchor Maggie Wade.

Wade, widely known for her “dedicated” work with children and her news segment, “Wednesday’s Child,” said she is extremely honored to have been chosen as grand marshal this year. “I am extremely elated in the midst of all the history that is being made to be part of this 80th birthday celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. King,” she said.

She was recently honored with a resolution for her “untiring” work in the community by Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes and the City Council. Wade expressed her gratitude to Stokes and the Council Tuesday at its first official meeting of the new year.

“What better way to kick off our first meeting than to recognize someone so deserving,” said Stokes.

In addition to her broadcasting career, Wade is also an educator. She serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Mass Communications department at Belhaven College. “Maggie is the real deal,” said Elayne Hayes-Anthony, Ph.D., professor and chair for the department. “She is a professional who is truly concerned about the community and children that must be served. I have enjoyed her friendship for a number of years. We team teach two classes here at Belhaven. I enjoy seeing her work with students and assist in molding their future.”

A wife and mother of two, Wade is often in high demand for speaking and program engagements. Just Friday, Jan. 16, she co-emceed with Superintendent Lonnie Edwards the naming ceremony  for the Jackson Public School District’s three new schools, approved by a 2006 bond passage. Groundbreakings for the schools are expected soon.

The naming ceremony was held at the state capitol. The honorees of the ceremony also joined Wade as marshals in today’s parade honoring the works of Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr. According to previous reports, the Jackson MLK parade is one of the largest in the United States.
