City honors the legacy of “Mikey” Johnson

The Mississippi Link

The late Michael “Mikey” Johnson, a talented Murrah High School athlete whose “first love” was baseball, is noted for making the decisive free-throws in the final seconds of Murrah’s win of the Mississippi 5A State Basketball Championship in 2005. Johnson was killed in what is described as a “tragic, senseless automobile accident” in June 2005. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, Councilwoman Margaret Barrett-Simon, shown here with his father Emmit Johnson (bottom center), and his friends and classmates, honored the athlete’s life with a resolution from the Jackson City Council. The North Jackson Baseball Field was also renamed in Johnson’s honor.
