Miss. celebrates historic memory of ‘Native Son’

Five JPS bands will participate in the Richard Wright Centennial Celebration parade on Saturday, September 6, 2008, beginning at 10 a.m. Lineup will be behind the Eudora Welty Library. Those bands are: Provine, Bailey, Lanier, Murrah, and Jim Hill.

In conjunction with the celebration, Rosia Crisler, teacher, writer, director, and producer of drama, will give presentations at several of the high schools through the English Departments of “The Agony of Life: Black Boy Revisited, which explores the personal struggle and cry of anguish for the human condition via universal themes and truths regarding family, race, injustice, faith, and violence. American tragedy, students will be able to realize Richard Wright’s fascination with the theory that human behavior is determined by environment, recognize the similarities between Wright’s world and their world, and embrace the connections between literature and life.
