What is it?
It is the Mu Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.’s Sixth Annual Image Awards Banquet, and it will be held at the Mississippi e-Center @ JSU, located at 1230 Raymond.
This annual awards banquet will benefit the American Cancer Society and Building Bridges, Inc. (BBI). BBI is a community-based, non-profit, an HIV/AIDS support agency. However, not only does the Phi Beta Sigma Annual Image Awards Banquet benefit chosen charities, but also highlights and honors some of the metro area’s most outstanding leaders in a variety of disciplines.
“The 2008 recipients are no exception,” said Elvin Crisp, president of the Mu Sigma Chapter. “Basically, the brothers come up with nominees who they feel stand out in the community, and we make our selection from that.”
The 2008 recipients and the discipline of which they were chosen are Former Governor Ronnie Musgrove (Humanitar-ian), Socrates Garrett (Business), Pastor Joe May (Religion), Marshall Ramsey (Media), Dr. Geraldine Chaney (Medicine), Attorney Robert Gibbs (Law), Dr. Rosie Pridgen (Education), Rep. Alyce Clark (Community Service) and Jessie Reed (deceased) (L.T. Smith Lifetime Achievement Award).
Honorees say they are humbled by the fraternity’s choice of them for the various Image Awards.
In an emailed statement to The Mississippi Link just before press time, former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove had this to say:
“I am honored to receive the Humanitarian Award from the Mu Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Helping others has guided me throughout my public and private life, and I pledge to continue working to improve educational and economic opportunities for my fellow Mississippians.”
Socrates Garrett, CEO of Garrett Enterprises, who will receive the 2008 Image Award for business, said: “The recognition is very much appreciated. This is just an example of what happens when you work hard. It’s not about how much money you make, it’s how you achieve and compete.”
The awards banquet is only one of the many community activities of the fraternity.
“We could not do this without the the support of our many sponsors,” said Crisp.
This year’s platinum sponsors are Jasper & Associates, Herrin-Gear Autoplex, and Jackson State University Student Development Division.
