U. S. Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) announced that the Mississippi Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL) – Academic and Student Affairs GEAR UP MS has been selected to receive funding under the GEAR-UP State Award Program by the United States Department of Education.
This grant will be in the amount of $3,000,000 for the period 07/15/2008 through 07/14/2009. It is anticipated that the grant will be for a total of six year(s).
GEAR UP MS will provide essential support to 9,492 7th grade students and their families from 24 low-income school districts with a high degree of minority students underrepresented in higher education.
The purpose of the program is to provide early college awareness activities, improved academic support, information on paying for college, and scholarships.
