Lockheed-Martin remembers deadly shooting anniversary

This month marks the 10th anniversary of the July 8, 2003 workplace shooting at the Lockheed Martin plant in Meridian, where Douglas Williams, 48 shot 14 co-workers, killing six of them before committing suicide.

The memory of that event is still fresh for investigators with the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office who responded to the call.

“We were living the nightmare all law enforcement agencies have,” Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie said. “Every year I relive this event. I can see the fleet of TV trucks that showed up from all over the nation. I can see the faces of the relatives of those who died. It isn’t a good memory.” […]

2 held in stabbing death of Brandon soldier

Police say a soldier who had recently returned to Camp Shelby from Afghanistan was killed in a fight during the early morning hours of June 2 outside a Hattiesburg bar.

Lt. Jon Traxler tells The Hattiesburg American 23-year-old Holden Hughes was stabbed in an altercation at about 12:40 a.m., outside Benny’s Boom Boom Room.

Traxler identified the suspects as 23-year-old Aaron Dement and 31-yeaer-old Derrick Valdez, both of Columbia. Both were taken to the Forrest County Jail and charged with homicide. […]

Man sentenced to house arrest in arson case

A federal court judge has ordered house arrest for a man charged with arson in a fire at a Yalobusha County business.

James Flemons was sentenced during a hearing in U. S. District Court in Oxford.

A federal indictment accused Flemons and another man of using pump sprayers to spay gas and kerosene inside Lindley’s Antique Mall in Oakland and then setting fire to the business on March 1, 2011. […]

Handgun found on Lauderdale County inmate

Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie says an investigation is under way to find out how an inmate at the county jail obtained a handgun.

The weapon was found on the inmate Jan. 3 prompting a search of an entire cell block.

The Meridian Star reported that 31-year-old Anthony Duane Talley Jr. of Meridian, was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of contraband. […]
