Parchman remains on lockdown after inmate murdered

The Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman remains on lockdown following a homicide and an altercation between inmates.  

Kelvin Bowen was killed on Tuesday, June 11, and a disturbance occurred Wednesday, June 12, in separate locations in Unit 29.  

Eleven inmates and five staff members were injured during the disturbance. Two inmates remain hospitalized.

Inmate stabbed to death at Parchman

An inmate serving 14 years for several convictions including simple assault on a police officer was stabbed to death allegedly by a fellow inmate Tuesday afternoon at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman.

Inmate Kelvin Bowen, 35, was pronounced dead at the prison’s hospital at 1:04 p.m.

Officials with the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) said Bowen was on his way to see a case manager when he was attacked with a sharp instrument in the hallway of Building 29, a maximum security unit, at the facility. […]

Inmates harvest fall crops

Enough vegetables, including broccoli, mustard and turnip greens, are being harvested now at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman to feed the 12,000-plus offenders in the three main prisons and community work centers of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC).

Farming is one way the state cuts down on food cost to taxpayers, plus give hundreds of inmates something to do while serving time.

In addition to vegetables, the Mississippi Prison Agricultural Enterprises (MPAE) crop production also includes rice, wheat, soybeans and corn. There’s also a poultry facility with a capacity for 36,000 hens. […]

Parchman’s escaped murderer Michael Dowda captured in Macon, Ga.

Mississippi State Penitentiary inmate Michael Dowda, who had escaped Saturday while on a maintenance work detail, has been captured in the early morning hours in Macon, Ga., according to a press release from the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

Through investigations by the MDOC-Corrections Investigation Division and United States Marshal’s Service in Mississippi and Georgia, Dowda was captured in Macon at approximately 12:30 a.m. today by officers with the U.S. Marshal’s Service in Georgia.

Dowda, 48, faces extradition to Mississippi and multiple charges including escape. […]
