Some Mississippi Valley State alumni oppose William Bynum to be university’s next president

JACKSON, Mississippi (AP) — Some Mississippi Valley State University alumni are complaining about the nomination of William Bynum to be the university’s next president.

Roosevelt Yarbrough, president of Valley’s alumni association, said at a news conference he wants the school to be led by an alumnus, and says he’s worried that Bynum doesn’t have any experience working for public universities.

“Nobody’s going to convince me we don’t have qualified Valley grads out there who can lead the university in the way it needs to go,” Yarbrough said Friday… […]

MVSU unveils plans to renovate HPER Complex

Mississippi Valley State University is planning $17.5 million in renovations and expansion the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.

MVSU officials say the work will include exterior repairs, life safety upgrades and accessibility upgrades. It will have 2,700 seats for athletic events and 2,800 seats for other programs, such as commencement.

The HPER Complex is the home for MVSU volleyball and basketball games. It has not been renovated or upgraded since its construction in 1977. […]

MVSU football player killed in accident, 3 others injured

A Mississippi Valley State football player was killed late Thursday night and three of his fellow athletes injured in a single vehicle accident in Leflore County.

Nineteen-year-old Kevin Monzon of Crystal Springs was pronounced dead at the scene, said Sgt. Ben Williams of the highway patrol. Monzon was reportedly driving on U.S. Highway 82 just east of Itta Bena around 8 p.m. April 25, when he ran off the roadway and rolled over.

A second passenger, Marcus Thompson, a junior from Houston, Texas was air-lifted to University Medical Center (UMC) in Jackson. […]

MVSU likely to continue without permanent leader

It appears Mississippi Valley State University is likely to lack a permanent leader for the foreseeable future, even though the College Board has recently named new presidents for two other state universities.

The College Board decided not to renew Donna Oliver’s contract at the Itta Bena institution in October, four years after she was named to head the smallest of Mississippi’s eight public universities.

But while the board moved quickly on openings at Delta State University and the University of Southern Mississippi, it has been slower in replacing Oliver. […]
