Expected corn acreage 53-year high for Mississippi

Mississippi farmers expect to have more than 1 million acres in corn this year and about 120,000 acres in rice – the largest corn acreage in 53 years and a 36-year low for rice.

A U.S. Department of Agriculture planting survey shows Mississippi farmers also plan to plant 1.95 million acres of soybeans and 270,000 acres of cotton this year.

The soybean acreage is changed little from last year’s 1.97 million acres, but farmers are planting 230,000 acres more of corn. […]

On April 25 and 26, 2013, the Mississippi Young Professionals (MSYP) will host the MSYP 2013 Summit, Rethink Mississippi: No Suits, No PowerPoints, No Bull, at the Mississippi State University Riley Center, located at 2200 Fifth Street in downtown Meridian.

The event, coordinated by the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA), will launch the first year of MSYP, a non-profit organization designed to connect the state’s existing young professionals and YP organizations in order to create a network that will develop, empower and retain young professionals in Mississippi. Death row inmate opposes setting execution date

Death row inmate Willie Jerome Manning has told the Mississippi Supreme Court that he has more arguments to make, meaning now is not the time to be setting an execution date sought by the attorney general’s office.

Manning was recently denied an appeal by the U.S. Supreme Court in the deaths of two college students. The attorney general’s office asked the Mississippi court to schedule the execution for April 24.

In a brief filed on April 1, Manning’s attorney said there are issues pending before the state high court. Manning is seeking a new trial, arguing that a jailhouse informant had recanted his testimony; that Manning’s trial attorney was ineffective; and that blacks were improperly kept off his trial jury. Condoleezza Rice: Democracy requires responsibility

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told a Mississippi State University audience that a mature democracy requires individual citizens understand not only their rights, but also their responsibilities.

Rice spoke about current world events, saying the United States and the world are facing some very difficult times, yet with great opportunities that suggest optimism.

Three people feared dead in massive house fire

Fire crews were still on the scene late Wednesday night looking through the rubble of a house that was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.

Four people were at the home on Blackjack and Bardwell Roads in Oktibbeha County, when a blaze broke out in the back bedroom.

Authorities said when they arrived, an elderly man, suffering from dementia, was in the backyard. […]

After being on the road to open the season for three consecutive weeks, JSU played their first home game in front of an announced crowd of over 20,000. Low numbers since the last time Southern came to Jackson. Saturday’s (Sept. 22) game against Southern was a great example of how Tiger fans are feeling. Let me explain. At this point in the season, die hard fans expected to be at least 2 & 2 after Saturday, not 1 & 3.

Mississippi State announces $75M stadium expansion

Mississippi State will begin a $75 million expansion of Davis Wade Stadium, with the project expected to be finished ahead of the 2014 season.
