It’s time for authentic festivals and fairs in ‘The True South’

One of the great traditions of summer in the True South is to attend an outdoor festival or fair for a taste of the diverse cultural heritage displayed across Mississippi.

Many of these are annual events that draw locals and visitors alike to enjoy long-standing traditions.

“Throughout the summer, there are so many unique festivals and fairs taking place in communities across Mississippi that showcase the authentic sights and sounds of our state’s Southern culture.” said Malcolm White, director of the Mississippi Development Authority’s Tourism Division.“ Now is a great time to plan a trip and experience the True South’s most interesting events of the summer.”

Rev. George Lee honored with Miss. Freedom Trail marker

On Friday, May 10, the Mississippi Freedom Trail honored Rev. George Lee with a marker in Belzoni. The event was at Green Grove M.B. Church at 603 Church Street in Belzoni. This is the 11th Mississippi Freedom Trail marker to be unveiled.

“The Mississippi Freedom Trail recognizes both the celebrated and lesser known heroes of the Civil Rights Movement,” said Malcolm White, director of the Mississippi Development Authority’s Tourism Division. “This marker helps to preserve Rev. Lee’s legacy and to educate Mississippians and visitors alike on his role in the fight for justice and equality.”

Mississippi Film Office celebrates 40th anniversary

On Jan. 17, the Mississippi Film Office celebrated its 40th anniversary with a special birthday cake celebration in the rotunda of the Mississippi State Capitol. Governor Phil Bryant also signed a proclamation declaring Jan. 17 as “Mississippi Film Day.” 

The state boasts one of the five oldest film commissions in the world.

MDA names Malcolm White as tourism director

Malcolm White has been named director of the Mississippi Development Authority’s (MDA) Tourism Division. White, who brings to MDA more than 40 years of experience in the economic development and tourism industries, began his new position on Jan.14.

Previously, White served for seven years as the executive director of the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). There, he was responsible for overseeing the agency’s staff and operations and driving its mission of supporting and celebrating the arts in Mississippi and the state’s creative culture.
