Man charged with killing pregnant girlfriend

A 50-year-old Jackson man has been charged with two counts of murder after he allegedly strangled his pregnant girlfriend killing her and her unborn child.

Ben Hawkins was arrested on Jan. 17 after police said he reportedly killed 31-year-old Darlene Day.

Jackson Police Officer Colendula Green said officers responded to a residence in the 2000 block of Teresa Drive on Jan. 11 in reference to an “unresponsive individual.” When officers arrived, they discovered Day in the home. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

2 dead in early Saturday Jackson shootings

Jackson police are investigating two early morning homicides.

WLBT reports that the first happened around 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Police said the 38-year-old victim was shot four times in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

Another shooting happened just after 2 a.m. Saturday. A 23-year-old man was gunned down at a Jackson intersection. He was shot five times and was pronounced dead on the scene. No arrests have been reported so far as the investigations continue.

Two former Jackson Police officers plead guilty to accepting bribes

Former Jackson Police Department Patrol Officers Monyette Quintel Jefferson, 27, and Terence Dale Jenkins, 25, have pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to accepting bribes from an undercover FBI agent.

In pleading guilty, federal officials said Jefferson and Jenkins admitted their involvement in protecting several drug transactions.

Suspect in KFC robbery held without bond

A man suspected of robbing a local restaurant at gunpoint is being held without bond, Jackson authorities said. Officer Colendula Green said 23-year-old Johnathan Reid was arrested on Oct. 9 and he was initially charged with two counts of armed robbery of a business.

Man dies of multiple gunshot wounds

WLBT is reporting that authorities are investigating their third homicide in the Capital City this weekend.

The most recent murder occurred Sunday afternoon in west Jackson where a 34-year-old man was shot several times and subsequently died of his injuries.

JPD sergeant arrested on bribery charges

Attorney General Jim Hood confirmed Wednesday that a Jackson Police officer has been arrested and now faces charged of accepting a bribe.

Richard McGahey, 43, of Clinton, has been indicted by a Hinds County Grand Jury for allegedly accepting a bribe in exchange for granting a field release for a suspect.

Swat teams raced down a closed off Capitol Street Saturday morning in downtown Jackson, along with k-9 officers on the ground and air support from Metro One.

Police were searching for Christopher Martin, 29. Police believe he’s the man that shot five-year veteran officer Rodney Daniels in the leg.
