B.B. King Museum hosts Black History Month Musical Celebration

In keeping with their mission to preserve the rich culture and music of the Mississippi Delta, The B.B. King Museum will host free musical programs every Thursday in February in honor of Black History Month.

On Feb. 7, the program will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature the music of: The Eastside High School Choir; The Greenwood High School Choir and the Restoration Ministries Academy.

Museum director, Dion Brown, said this month’s program is just a preview of what The B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center will offer to the public in 2013.

Man murdered over 2 cigarettes

Police Chief Richard O’Bannon said a local man has yet to have his preliminary hearing after he allegedly shot and killed a man over two broken cigarettes.

O’Bannon said 20-year-old Mark Haney Jr. is being held without bond for the Dec. 15, 2012 murder of 26-year-old Lonnie Brooks.

O’Bannon said the altercation between Haney and Brooks began around 10:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Royal Ridge Apartments on Gillespie Drive in Indianola.

B.B. King and others among 2013 Songwriters Hall of Fame nominees

Mississippi native B.B. King, Elvis Costello and Ray Davies are among the nominees for the 2013 Songwriters Hall of Fame.

They’re joined by a slew of top acts, including Jimmy Buffett, Vince Gill and Rod Temperton, who wrote Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” “Rock With You” and “Off the Wall.”

B.B. King honored with marker on Miss. Blues Trail

The town of Kilmichael had a lot to sing about Tuesday afternoon when the “King of the Blues”, B.B. King stopped by for the unveiling of the latest marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail.

King, 86, is in Mississippi this week for his annual B.B. King Homecoming Festival in Indianola, but he, and the town of Kilmichael were honored Tuesday by the Mississippi Development Association Tourism Division (MDA).

KILMICHAEL – There is no doubt that legendary bluesman B.B. King is a down-to-earth kind of guy. His superstar status has earned him international and worldwide recognition and his talent and musical abilities are beyond question.
But the singer’s humble nature has become so evident, especially when he makes the time to return “home” to the Mississippi Delta to participate in his annual homecoming celebration.
