Video shows suspect killing police detective

Details continue to emerge into the shooting death of a Jackson police detective and the suspect he was questioning. Detective Eric Smith, 40, was killed in the line of duty early Thursday evening while questioning 23-year-old Jeremy Powell. Powell was being charged with April 1 murder of Christopher Alexander.

Alexander was found dead on Greenwood Avenue near Daniel Lake Boulevard early April 1. He had been stabbed to death.

The Associated Press (AP) said authorities have a video from the police interrogation room that shows Powell shot Smith to death before killing himself with the officer’s gun.

Tupelo teen charged in parking lot assault

An 18-year-old has been charged with aggravated assault after she allegedly cut another woman in the neck and throat in a Kroger parking lot earlier this month.

Virginia Flores was charged by Tupelo police for an incident that occurred on Feb. 9. Reportedly, an altercation between Flores and the female victim began as they were driving down the roadway in separate cars and escalated when they pulled into the parking lot of a Kroger grocery store on West Main Street.

Man falls asleep while smoking, dies in fire

A 70-year-old Natchez man has died from severe burns to his upper body and face days after he fell asleep smoking a cigarette setting his bed and sheets on fire.

Bill Grover Hammett died Jan. 26 at the Joseph M. Still burn center at Doctor’s Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

Adams County Sheriff Chuck Mayfield said deputies responded to a report of a house fire at 1:06 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24.

Man charged with killing pregnant girlfriend

A 50-year-old Jackson man has been charged with two counts of murder after he allegedly strangled his pregnant girlfriend killing her and her unborn child.

Ben Hawkins was arrested on Jan. 17 after police said he reportedly killed 31-year-old Darlene Day.

Jackson Police Officer Colendula Green said officers responded to a residence in the 2000 block of Teresa Drive on Jan. 11 in reference to an “unresponsive individual.” When officers arrived, they discovered Day in the home. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Suspect in KFC robbery held without bond

A man suspected of robbing a local restaurant at gunpoint is being held without bond, Jackson authorities said. Officer Colendula Green said 23-year-old Johnathan Reid was arrested on Oct. 9 and he was initially charged with two counts of armed robbery of a business.

Man dies of multiple gunshot wounds

WLBT is reporting that authorities are investigating their third homicide in the Capital City this weekend.

The most recent murder occurred Sunday afternoon in west Jackson where a 34-year-old man was shot several times and subsequently died of his injuries.

JSU security guard shot to death

A Jackson State University security guard was found dead in a city street early Saturday morning.

WLBT-TV reports 27-year-old Joseph Welch was shot five times, according to officials. Jackson police say Welch failed to show up for work at 10 p.m. Friday night.

17-year-old shot and killed in Presidential Hills

Jackson Police responded to a deadly shooting Tuesday night.

A 17-year-old-male was shot in the Presidential Hills subdivision shortly after 8:30 p.m. It happened in the 6600 block of Abraham Lincoln Drive.
