COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) – The city of Columbus has sent a pending criminal case against a state lawmaker to Lowndes County Justice Court.

City spokesman Joe Dillon confirmed to The Commercial Dispatch (http://bit.ly/2h2tFZB ) Thursday that the city had transferred all case files for a domestic violence charge against first-term Democratic state Rep. Kabir Karriem on Wednesday.

Karriem was charged with misdemeanor domestic violence in October after his 18-year-old daughter told police he had hit her during an argument. She has since recanted that statement.

Karriem was to appear before Judge Rhonda Ellis in Columbus Municipal Court Thursday. Dillon said both Ellis and Judge Gary Goodwin recused themselves because they were either hired or being considered for hire while Karriem served on the city council.
