The Jackson Public School District honors the life of Callaway High School Principal William Trammell III.

We are thankful to Mayor Tony Yarber and the City of Jackson, the media, Callaway adopters, and so many others who have expressed condolences and words of comfort to his family, friends, and school family.

“Mr. Trammell was beloved by his students, teachers, adopters and alumni,” said Dr. Freddrick Murray interim JPS superintendent. “His kind and uplifting spirit will dwell in the halls and classrooms of Callaway High School. We will continue his legacy and mission of moving Callaway High School to greatness.” Trammell’s career was characterized by a quest for excellence and compulsion to serve.

After earning a bachelor of science degree in biology from Jackson State University, he decided to enter the education field. He completed two advanced degrees in education, including a masters of education degree in leadership and a specialist of education degree in education administration and supervision, both from Mississippi College.

Trammell became the principal of Callaway High School in 2013 after appointments as a school administrator in the Simpson County School District, Hazlehurst City School District and the Hinds County School District.

He began his education career in Jackson Public Schools as a teacher at Whitten Middle School. Due to their close proximity, a unique bond was shared between Callaway High, North Jackson Elementary and Kirksey Middle schools. Throughout the year, the schools’ visited each other, marched together and held programs together.

Trammell provided opportunities for the high school students to mentor and encourage the younger students. The District shares in the grief and sadness of the students and employees of these schools as they mourn the passing of Principal Trammell. Counselors and district support staff are offering comfort and other assistance to the students, teachers and staff at Callaway.

Trammell and his wife Vanessa have one daughter.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, 2 p.m., at Truelight M.B. Church located at 224 East Bell Street, Jackson, MS 39209.
