JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – A downtown Jackson park near the Mississippi Governor’s Mansion is getting a makeover.
The Clarion-Ledger reports (http://on.thec-l.com/2f1iE9G ) work on Smith Park will cost about $2.5 million, with the goal of providing a safer and more attractive gathering place.
Ben Allen, president of Downtown Jackson Partners, says money so far is coming from private donors.
Crews started removing dying trees Nov. 5. Allen says concrete streams will be filled with dirt. Plans call for restoration to be finished by the spring.
The Smith Park Architectural District, which includes the 2.4-acre park and several buildings nearby, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
An application for the register shows that the park was the only public square established with the city of Jackson’s original plan in 1822.
