City of Jackson’s next Roll-Off Dumpster Day is Nov. 12

The city of Jackson is encouraging citizens of Jackson to participate in Roll-Off Dumpster Day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., weather permitting, Nov. 12. Residents can take tree limbs, other yard debris and household items to one of the following locations: North Smith Wills Stadium, 1200 block of Lakeland Drive, east of softball field Central Gravel lot just east of 2550 Medgar Evers Boulevard, old Pepsi building west of Jackson Medical Mall West Raines Park, 5260 Clinton Boulevard and Flag Chapel Road, located in parking lot South Tennis South Center, 1517 McDowell Road, located in parking lot Residents may bring all household furniture, small appliances and accessories for disposal. However, tires, chemicals and gas tanks are not accepted in Roll off Dumpster program. Participants are required to place debris inside dumpster provided at the locations. City business and residents living outside the city limits of the city of Jackson are not eligible to participate. Proof of residency may be required.

Jackson’s Christmas Parade set for Dec. 3

The city of Jackson’s annual Christmas Parade will be at noon Dec. 3. The event is co-sponsored by The Salvation Army. The theme is “Christmas in the Capital.” This year’s lineup will include several marching bands, numerous organizations and city departments. The city’s annual Tree Lighting Ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 2, at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall. For more information contact Ashley Drummer at (601) 960-1084.

Local high schools plan events to honor veterans

High schools in the Jackson Public School District are gearing up to pay tribute to U.S. military veterans in observance of Veterans Day. Brigadier General Margarett E. Barnes, U.S. Army Reserve retired, will serve as the guest speaker for the Jim Hill High School JROTC Veterans Day program at 2 p.m. on Nov. 11. Barnes served as the Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army Human Resource Command prior to retiring. The program will be conducted in the auditorium and will consist of the presentation of colors, Pledge of Allegiance, Cadet Creed, patriotic music and remarks by Barnes. Barnes will also present the Legion of Valor award to Cadet LTC Victoria A. Hawkins of Jim Hill High School. The purpose of the program is to honor the veterans who have served and those who are currently serving in the Armed Forces and to make students aware of the sacrifices that these individuals have made to enable us all to have the freedom that we currently enjoy. Approximately 150 students are expected to be in attendance. Veterans, along with their families, parents and community members, are invited to attend. Dates, times and locations are provided below for each JPS high school Veterans Day program.
