CRYSTAL SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) – Students at a Mississippi Job Corps center will be among 60 getting a year of tuition-free college education, along with preparation and mentorship.
The U.S. Labor Department and the Tom Joyner Foundation announced the plan Friday.
Job Corps participants from the Crystal Springs center will enroll at Tougaloo College or Hinds Community College. Participants at a Texas center will enroll in Hutson-Tillotson University or Austin Community College. The pilot program is scheduled to begin this month and run through 2019, measuring whether students make it to a two-year or four-year degree.
Jobs Corps is a no-cost education program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor providing vocational and academic training to people ages 16 to 24. Radio personality Tom Joyner’s foundation supports historically black colleges and universities.
