Youth Villages seeks Holiday Heroes for more than children
Youth Villages is seeking Holiday Heroes for children in the greater Jackson area and across Mississippi who may have suffered abuse, neglect or are dealing with mental health issues. As a Holiday Hero, you can make the holiday wishes come true for a child in your community or a child and his or her siblings. Youth Villages is a private nonprofit organization with the mission to help emotionally and behaviorally troubled children and their families live successfully. Individuals, families or groups may become Holiday Heroes by either requesting a child’s holiday wish list and shopping for the child, making a financial contribution to the Holiday Heroes Fund or making in-kind donations. A $100 donation will purchase all of the items on a child’s wish list, and a $200 donation will provide gifts to a child and his or her siblings. Youth Villages appreciates donations of any size along with toys. Toy donations are accepted during Youth Villages’ Toy Drive set for the weekends of Nov. 5 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Nov. 6 from 12 a.m. to 5 p.m. and also Nov. 12, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Nov. 13, 12 a.m. to 5 p.m. in front of Toys ‘R’ Us at the Outlets of Mississippi at 200 Bass Pro Dr., Pearl. Youth Villages also is holding a toy drive Nov. 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Wal-Mart parking lot at 5341 Highway 25 in Flowood. Women for Progress plans Strategic Doing Workshop
Women for Progress of Mississippi will host a Strategic Doing Workshop from 5-8 p.m. Nov. 16, at the Jackson Arts Center, 201 East Pascagoula St. in Jackson. The workshop will introduce attendees to the unique process of Strategic Doing – a framework that helps groups identify their assets, develop new strategies to link those assets into new opportunities and build trust between groups. The workshop will focus on quickly identifying ways Women for Progress of MS, Inc. can take action rather than producing more plans to gather dust on a shelf. In teams, attendees will develop strategies that will result in customized action plans for the organization. Attendees will leave the session with the next steps necessary to help move Women for Progress of MS, Inc. forward. Habitat for Humanity’s ‘Not Nailed Down Sale’ set for Nov. 12
Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Capital Area is having a warehouse sale of new and used items that the non-profit no longer needs or cannot use. The sale will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 12, at the HFHMCA warehouse at 615 Stonewall St. in Jackson. The items for sale include construction materials, electrical supplies, tools, HVAC condensers, refrigerators, furniture, commercial insulation tiles and household items. Everything is being sold “as is.” Only cash and credit cards will be accepted. All sales are final and all items purchased must be removed from the warehouse by the end of the sale. “This is a great opportunity to get a new or used item that you need at a great price while helping Habitat for Humanity clean out its warehouse and raise funds to build more homes and change more lives,” said Merrill McKewen, executive director of the non-profit. NAMI plans walk, will honor lawmakers Nov. 5
On Nov. 5, the National Alliance on Mental Illness in Mississippi-NAMI MS will honor six of Mississippi’s 174 state lawmakers as Legislative Champions for distinguished efforts that set them apart from peers. Legislative champions senators Derrick Simmons, Buck Clarke and Sean Tindell, along with representatives Jeremy Anderson, Jarvis Dortch and Linda Coleman, will be honored during the post-walk ceremony scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., at the Mississippi Museum of Art 380 South Lamar St., Jackson. Prior to the ceremony, the annual NAMI walk begins at 9 a.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m. at the museum. Music and family friendly activities will be provided.
