Al.com reports the decision came Monday during a hearing in Mobile for 28-year-old Derrick Dearman of Leakesville, Miss.

Dearman is charged with multiple counts of murder in the killings of five people who were shot and hit with an ax in a rural home in Citronelle, Ala. Authorities say the man’s estranged girlfriend was saying in the house where the slayings occurred.

Police say the woman was abducted and later reported the slayings to police.

Dearman is being held without bond. Authorities say Dearman has confessed to the killings in interviews with investigators.

Dearman blamed the slayings on his drug use in comments to the media following his arrest.
