JACKSON, Mississippi (AP) — Police believe all the hostages have been safely removed without a shot being fired, but the man suspected of holding about a dozen people against their will Thursday morning remained inside a Mississippi boarding house.
Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance said police received a 911 call at about 5 a.m. from someone inside the house.
“When police arrived, somebody came to the door, saw it was the police, slammed the door and went back in the house,” the chief said.
Vance said police have a name of the suspect, but have not been able to verify his identification.
Two schools are nearby, but students there were not in danger, Vance said.
“It’s contained in that house. Nobody else including the students inside these schools are in any danger,” Vance said. “We know there is one individual still in there, but were not sure at this point, if he is the only one. We don’t have an official head count of everybody that was visiting,” he said.
Vance said that at this point, his officers will wait it out. “There is no time line of when we were going to have this resolved. We’re committed to staying here as long as it takes to bring this to a peaceful resolution,” he said.
Police were still interviewing the hostages and trying to determine the cause of the standoff. “There are too many questions out there for us to start drawing solid conclusions,” Vance said.
