Mississippi patrol: 1 killed, 57 injured during long weekend

mississippi-highway-patroljpg-d69e58725a04c277JACKSON, Mississippi (AP) — The Mississippi Highway Patrol says one person died and 57 were injured in crashes on state and federal highways during the long Labor Day weekend.

The death happened Monday in Noxubee County, when a pickup truck ran off Mississippi Highway 14 and hit a tree. The passenger, 50-year-old Tommie L. Harris of Columbus, was tossed out of the vehicle and killed. An investigation continues.

The Highway Patrol’s Labor Day weekend reporting period started at 6 p.m. Friday and ended at midnight Monday.

A patrol news release says 170 crashes were investigated, with 41 of those crashes occurring in Mississippi’s six southernmost counties. Troopers statewide made 175 DUI arrests.
