TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Kansas is reporting that its tax collections in August fell $10 million short of expectations. It was the fourth consecutive month that the state has failed to hit its revenue projections. The state Department of Revenue reported Thursday that the state collected about $427 million in taxes last month, when a fiscal forecast made in April predicted that the state would take in more than $437 million.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – An economist says as Mississippi lawmakers evaluate the state tax system, they should look at Indiana, North Carolina and Washington, D.C., as success stories. Nicole Kaeding (KAY-ding) of the Tax Foundation also calls Kansas “an example of what not to do.”
NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Authorities say a third person has died from injuries suffered when a bus hit a fire truck and other vehicles on Interstate 10 west of New Orleans last weekend. State police say 33-year-old Vontarous Kelly, of Moss Point, Mississippi, died Thursday. Authorities say the firetruck was blocking the scene of an earlier crash when it and other vehicles were hit by the bus carrying people seeking flood recovery work. More than 30 people were injured.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The Mississippi State Department of Health has named a new state epidemiologist. Dr. Paul Byers, most recently served as deputy state epidemiologist, will replace Dr. Thomas Dobbs, who resigned to spend more time with his family. Byers has been with the department since 1993.
