Jackson Zoo seeks volunteer landscapes, plans wet/wild party

 

The Jackson Zoo Master Gardeners is looking for volunteers, landscapers from 8-10 a.m. Aug. 13, for its monthly work around the grounds.

Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and shoes and bring some gloves.

The zoo is also having its Wet and Wild party from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the same day to celebrate a new school year. In attendance will be  the Jackson Showboats, Mississippi Smiles Dentistry, Snap Happy Face Painting, Metro PCS, “Hogwash” Pepsi and Brown Bottling, Palm Beach Tan, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mississippi, Piney Woods School, Pearls for Girls Jackson, Usborne Books, Paparazzi Jewelry and Gifts from God, with special guests Dr. Rhythm and Spiderman.

Other activities, including water slides, will be available. All the fun is covered in the cost of regular admission.

 

One Voice announces fall internship opportunities

 

One Voice is now accepting applications for the 2016 Fall Session of the Hollis Watkins Muhammad Leadership Development Institute. This internship is a 14 to 16-week program aimed at providing critical leadership tools to college students that help them to become world leaders in the field of social justice.

It was named in honor of Hollis Watkins Muhammad, a veteran of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement and the first student to join the Mississippi chapter of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, who worked side-by-side with other Civil Rights leaders such as Fannie Lou Hamer, Medgar Evers and Bob Moses.

HWM interns will be placed in One Voice departments that match their career interests, while learning about current social justice work and Civil Rights history.

Focus areas are communications, events planning/public relations, program/project management and administrative specialist.

To be considered for an internship in HWMI, candidates must be:

• A graduate student, undergraduate student, or have graduated from an accredited college within twelve months of beginning the internship program.

• In good standing at the college or university; and

• Be able to work between 15 to 30 hours per week

I Am My Brother’s Keeper forum set in Canton

 

The Canton Juneteenth Committee will host a community forum titled, “I Am My Brother’s Keeper” at 10 a.m. Aug. 13 at Nichols Middle School in Canton.

Representatives from law enforcement, the business community, clergy, education and other community members will discuss the plight of men and boys in working with issues plaguing the community. Activities will involve a panel discussion and the development of action steps to move forward. All community residents, including youth, are encouraged to attend. The event is free and open to the public.
