North park Mall certified ‘StormReady’ by National Weather Service

 

Northpark Mall is honored to announce it has been dubbed “StormReady” by the National Weather Service. As summer quickly approaches in Mississippi, safety in the event of severe weather is top-of-mind for citizens and officials alike.

The certification recognizes the mall for its preparedness to handle all types of severe and potentially life-threatening weather situations through communications infrastructures, community outreach and hazardous weather training. The National Weather Service’s StormReady program is a partnership with emergency management that helps reduce risk and increases community resilience to hazards.

“The safety and well-being of our shoppers has always been one of our top priorities and this certification signifies that we are now officially prepared for whatever Mother Nature may send our way,” said Kasey Dickson, director of Marketing and Business Development, Northpark Mall. “We are grateful to the National Weather Service and its StormReady Advisory Council for providing us with this proud distinction.”

 

Annual gospel concert benefits Hinds CC law enforcement scholarship

 

The annual Good Old Fashioned Country Gospel Concert for the benefit of the Robert Wallace Hollingsworth Family Scholarship for Law Enforcement at Hinds Community College is set for 6:30 p.m. June 16, at Cain-Cochran Hall on the Raymond Campus.

Admission is free but donations are accepted.

The concert features Once Voice from Vicksburg, Potters Clay Quartet from Houston, Born Again Quartet from Byram, pianist Janet Neal from Vicksburg, comedienne Naomi Barnette from Raymond and master of ceremonies Jack Hollingsworth of Utica.

The annual benefit concert began in 2004 to help raise funds for Mike Hollingsworth, Jack Hollingsworth’s son, a Warren County deputy sheriff who was injured in the line of duty. Family members saw such great success with the event that they decided to make it a tradition. Currently, all proceeds from the benefit go to the Hollingsworth Family Law Enforcement Scholarship, which ultimately helps a deserving Hinds student attend college. The scholarship made its first award to a Hinds student in 2009.

The scholarship is dedicated to five Hollingsworth men, all serving in some capacity in the field of law enforcement. The student receiving the scholarship must be majoring in criminal justice.

 

Toastmasters planning two open house meetings

 

District 43 Toastmasters will have Open House Toastmasters Meetings from 5:30-6:30 p.m. June 9 and June 23 in the Strayer University Building, first floor conference Room, 460 Briarwood Dr. in Jackson.

Individuals age 18 and older are  invited, and there’s no cost to attend.

Toastmasters is designed to help individuals improve communication with family and friends, resolve conflicts effectively, make better grades in school, learn to give and receive constructive feedback/evaluations, develop speaking and leadership skills, ace job interviews, learn effective networking, learn how to stop repeating yourself, develop speeches and presentations, and learn how to think quickly on your feet without stuttering or fumbling over your words.

Roll-Off Dumpster Day offered to Jackson residents June 25

 

The city of Jackson is encouraging citizens to participate in Roll-Off Dumpster Day. Residents can take tree limbs, other yard debris, and household items to one of the following locations from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 25, weather permitting.

– Smith Wills Stadium, 1200 block of Lakeland Drive, east of softball field

– Gravel lot just east of 2550 Medgar Evers Blvd., old Pepsi building west of Jackson Medical Mall

– Raines Park, 5260 Clinton Blvd. and Flag Chapel Road, located in parking lot

– Tennis South Center, 1517 McDowell Road, located in parking lot

Residents may bring all household furniture, small appliances and accessories for disposal. However, tires, chemicals and gas tanks are not accepted in Roll off Dumpster program. Participants are required to place debris inside dumpster provided at the locations.

City business and residents living outside the city limits of Jackson are not eligible to participate. Proof of residency may be required.
