PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) – The pilot of a small airplane that landed on Interstate 10 in south Mississippi said he lost power as he was approaching Gulfport and didn’t have enough altitude to try to glide back to Mobile. Rodney McKnight Jr. told reporters at the scene near Biloxi that he took off from Auburn, Alabama, and planned to spend Memorial Day in Gulfport when the single-engine plane developed problems. A motorist said drivers slowed down because McKnight was able to signal his need to land.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) – The City of Hattiesburg is changing more than 1,500 lights to LED bulbs to cut energy costs under incentives offered by Mississippi Power. The Hattieburg American reports that the municipal airport, City Hall and Eastside Park are among the locations that will get the new bulbs. Mississippi Power spokesman Jeff Shepard says all the outdoor lighting and some indoor lighting in city buildings and offices will be swapped out.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) – A 13-year-old boy has died after being pulled from a community center pool in Hattiesburg. Juwine Hughes of Laurel was pronounced dead Monday morning at University Medical Center in Jackson. Police said Hughes was found unresponsive in the water around 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
TUPELO, Miss. (AP) – Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton got married over the weekend and, while he’s away for his honeymoon, the city will have seven different people serving in the mayor’s office in seven days’ time. The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports Shelton signed an order last week designating that each member of the city council will serve as mayor _ each on a specific day.
