CLINTON, Miss. (AP) – Mississippi’s state Board of Education is voting to follow political leaders’ opposition to federal guidance on use of bathrooms and locker rooms by transgender students. The board made the 9-0 vote Tuesday. The move came after state Superintendent Carey Wright came under sharp criticism for her initial stance that Mississippi’s state education apparatus would follow the federal guidance calling for transgender students to be treated consistently with the gender they currently identify as.
CANTON, Miss. (AP) – Madison County authorities are investigating the death of a 1-year-old boy. Multiple media reports say Coroner Alex Breeland was called to Merit Health Madison around noon Tuesday. Sheriff’s spokesman Heath Hall said the child’s parents woke up about 11 a.m. and found the baby unresponsive. The parents rushed the baby to the hospital, where Breeland pronounced him dead.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) – A federal judge has ordered the return of more than $1 million in settlement money granted to a seafood company after the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier (BAHR’-bee-aye) ruled Tuesday that Texas-based Crystal Seafood Company defrauded the administrators of a BP settlement fund when it claimed to be an ongoing business affected by the storm. Evidence showed Crystal had ceased processing and shipping shrimp months before the spill.
BILOXI, Miss. (AP) – Police say there is no evidence of shots being fired outside of the Biloxi High School graduation ceremony following reports about a possible shooting. Local media outlets reports officers responded to a call regarding gunshots at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Tuesday, but didn’t find evidence to substantiate the report. De Back says officers did break up a fight in the parking lot after the ceremony.
