Tunica man gets 10 years, 5 years suspended, for theft

chesterilandJACKSON, Miss. (AP) – A 25-year-old Tunica man is going to prison for stealing more than $27,000 from his father’s retirement account.

Attorney General Jim Hood, in a news release Thursday, said Chester Island pleaded guilty to one count of false pretense before Panola County Circuit Court Judge Smith Murphey.

Murphey sentenced Island to 10 years in state custody, suspending five of them. He also ordered Island to pay full restitution to his father and pay a $100 assessment to the Crime Victims Compensation Fund.

An investigation by Hood’s Public Integrity Division uncovered that Island submitted false paperwork to the Public Employees’ Retirement System of Mississippi and stole the money from his father’s retirement account.
